Nursing Schools

Nursing Schools

A person with aspirations of becoming a nurse will have a number of options available to them as it concerns training.  Whether or not to go a local school or an online one is one of those options. There are advantages and disadvantage associated with each. We will discuss what some of those are, below.

One of the primary advantages of going to a local nursing school is the physical access a person will have to their instructors. An individual will be able to actually see their professor and have him or her explain important and difficult concepts in person. Online,  a person may have to figure things out a little more on his or her own. Now, they won’t have to completely. They will have access to instructors. They just won’t be able to meet with them face-to-face.

One of the biggest disadvantages associated with local nursing schools is the face-time they require. A person enrolled in this type of program will be required to physically attend class. If they have a full-time job or important family obligations, they may not be able to fit traditional schooling into their schedule.

When considering nursing schools, a person will need to determine right away whether or not a particular school is accredited. A non-accredited school may be easier to get into. However, it can be much more difficult finding a job upon completion of the program.  Individuals who attend and graduate from accredited programs are much more employable.

Nursing is a great field to go into. Because the present pool of nurses is smaller than the demand for them, many employers are pulling out all of the stops to attract workers. For instance, many hospitals will offer their nurses flexible working arrangements, allowing them to work an abbreviated work week.

Nursing schools are also hoping to enticing prospective students by offering student-repayment plans. If a person enters and completes a nursing school, they will be able work off their student loans by working at an assigned hospital or facility. This is very similar to programs offered in the field of education where there are also shortages.

Student loan forgiveness programs exist to pay off the student loans of nurse who agree to work in certain areas or hospitals for “x” amount of years. These programs are good option, especially in today’s economy where good jobs can be difficult to come by and the cost of college and career training, sky-high and increasing every year. Because nearly one million nursing jobs will be available between now and 2018, more nurses than ever are needed in the U.S., making it a great time to join the field.
